Course Description

The BETTER Program (BETTER) is an evidence-based approach to chronic disease prevention and screening, focusing on cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and associated risk factors.

This self-paced, on-demand course will introduce healthcare professionals to BETTER’s approach to cancer and chronic disease prevention and screening (CCDPS) as well as the Prevention Practitioner role, a clinician with enhanced skills in CCDPS.

A detailed overview of the harmonized international and Canadian clinical practice guideline recommendations included in BETTER for adults 40-69 years of age will be provided to help healthcare professionals determine patients’ eligibility for CCDPS as well as appropriate next steps.

Primary prevention and screening recommendations for the following areas within scope for BETTER will be reviewed:

    - cancers: breast, colorectal, cervical, lung, and prostate;
    - chronic diseases:  diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and osteoporosis/bone health;
    - other conditions: depression; and
    - lifestyle risk factors: diet, physical activity, alcohol, cannabis, tobacco, and vaping/e-cigarette use.

    Learners will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained using case studies as well as reflect on how the approach can inform their practice. Access to digital copies of the BETTER tools described in the course will also be provided.

    Enrolment Fee

    The enrolment fee includes access to the course content. Upon successful completion of the course, learners will receive a Certificate of Completion and access to PDF versions of the BETTER tools.
