Course Description

The BETTER Program (BETTER) is an evidence-based approach to chronic disease prevention and screening, focusing on cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and associated risk factors.

This self-paced, on-demand course will introduce interprofessional healthcare providers (IHPs) to cancer survivorship and poverty screening within the primary care setting.

A detailed overview of the harmonized international and Canadian clinical practice guideline recommendations included in BETTER for adults 40-69 years of age will be provided to help IHPs determine patients’ eligibility for cancer surveillance actions as well as appropriate next steps. A tool to help providers screen for poverty will also be discussed.

Clinical recommendations for the following areas within scope for BETTER will be reviewed:

    - cancer surveillance: breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer;
    - bone health;
    - long-term effects and symptoms from treatment;
    - symptoms indicating cancer recurrence;
    - mental health: depression, anxiety, and distress; and
    - lifestyle risk factors: diet, physical activity, alcohol, cannabis, tobacco, and vaping/e-cigarette use.

    Learners will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained using case studies as well as reflect on how the approach can inform their practice. Access to digital copies of the BETTER tools described in the course will also be provided.

    Enrolment Fee

    The enrolment fee includes access to the course content. Upon successful completion of the course, learners will receive a Certificate of Completion and access to PDF versions of the BETTER tools. Access to BETTER tools, electronic or otherwise, which are not offered as supporting materials in the course are not included in the enrolment fee.
